Rowden Barn

NOSS MAYO

The history of Rowden Court goes back to the 1870s when Lord Revelstoke (formerly Edward Baring of the Baring Brothers Bank) spent a large amount of money on his Membland Hall estate, consisting of 4,000 acres of South Hams countryside surrounding his Jacobean mansion at Membland.  This included building a 10 mile coastal carriage drive for his wife, along which walks can still be enjoyed.  Access to the drive and the stunning coast path is a short distance from the Barn.

Rowden Court was originally a range of farm outhouses.  In order to preserve their architectural merit, permission was granted to convert them in the late 1980s.  The Barn itself was converted some years later.

The remote wilderness of Dartmoor dominates the views to the north and the South Hams farmland to the South.  Dartmoor is a short drive away, while the beautiful estuary of the River Erme and Mothecombe beach are also only a couple of miles from the Barn with 130 acres of sand at low tide.

A quarter of a mile down the lane from the Barn is Stoke Beach, a secluded cove which at low tide gives access to a series of sheltered coves with rockpools and caves and views to Burgh Island and beyond.
